On August 3, the Superintendency of electricity and fuels developed a work table in which it was based on the Accidentabilidad from the handling and use of the electric kettle appliance.
Different actors from the security area were invited to SERNAC, SEC, COANIQUEN, INN, laboratories and national certification bodies in addition to 24 importers and marketers of the product Electric in question.
According to the report of statistics of injury data associated to consumer products in COANIQUEM, developed by the Department of Quality and safety of products of SERNAC, and a study on them carried out in the year 2016, the growing use of the kettle Electric has been associated with more than 950 injured minors who entered COANIQUEM in the last 5 years, mainly due to the misuse and tipping of this device.
In reference to this work table it should be noted that INGCER, laboratory of electrical products, developed on request of SERNAC normative and additional tests to this product in the 2016 contributing to the investigation in Question.
According to this study, which covers cases between 2013 and 2017, the greatest number of accidents occurs in children between 1 year and 1 year and 11 months, with 232 cases, equivalent to 24.4%. The age range from 1 year to 9 years is 70.2% of the total number of injured girls.
The incidents are mainly caused by some unsafe behaviors in the use of the kettle, so that in the framework of the work table has raised the need to promote a culture of security, as well as advance in the redesign of these products to help Reduce risks.
For the national Director of SERNAC, Lucas del Villar, the main objective of this work table is to go far beyond the existing regulations to reduce the accidents of children with electric kettles and to raise the standard of protection to consumers of Our country with a focus on people's safety.
It is expected in the medium term to generate concrete measures in conjunction with industry and sectoral agencies. Therefore, the basic recommendation is that the consumer spends the time necessary to read the precaution label affixed to the product body and to review the instruction manual with information regarding use, warnings, precautions and maintenance necessary, for safe use, in order to become aware of risk prevention, and to allow the reduction of such incidents.
Prevention Measures:
- Place the appliance on a horizontal surface, placing it as far away from its edges as possible, out of reach of children.
- Connect the appliance directly to the wall socket.
- Leaving the cord hanging will allow the child to pull and tip the hot liquid over.
- Read the instruction manual before using the appliance.
- Privilege the use of kettles with movable platform.
- Prefer those artifacts that have short cable.
- Choose kettles with effective safety systems at the lid closure to reduce spillage when tipping the appliance.
